HOW TO PLAY

Squash is a racket sport played by two players (single) or four players (double). The ball is served and the players take turns hitting the ball against the front, side or back walls. The ball must be played above the tin and below the “out” lines. In squash, similarly to many other racket sports, the ball may only bounce once on the floor. Players may move anywhere around the court.

HOW TO SCORE

In singles, a squash match is the best of 3 or the best of 5 games. Each game is played to 11 points. The player who scores 11 points first wins the game, except that if the score reaches 10-all. In that case the game continues until one player leads by two points. The scoring of points is based on PAR (Point-A-Rally) system. If the server wins the rally, she/he scores a point and retains the service. However, if the receiver wins the rally, she/he scores a point and gains the service.

INTERFERENCE

When a player’s turn comes to play the ball, she/he is entitled to freedom from interference by the opponent. That is, the opponent has to provide unobstructed access to the ball, space to hit it, and freedom to play directly to any part of the front wall.

In case a player finds their opponent interfering with the play, they can either accept it and play on, or stop play. It's best to stop play and call out “Let”, if there is any possibility of colliding with the opponent. In this circumstance there are two possible options. The first option is to replay the point as a “Let”, where it is accepted that the opponent was making every effort to avoid any interference. The second option is to agree that interference is substantial and the player could not have played the ball. In this second option a “Stroke” is awarded where the player wins the point.

The basis for a ‘Let’, ‘Stroke’ or ‘No Let’ can be complicated, especially for new players. Thus it is highly recommended that the Rules of Squash are read to fully understand and clarify the distinctions.

STRATEGY

The most basic squash strategy is after making a shot to return to the center of the court. The center of the court is also called the “T” and is where the red lines meet. Therefore, players will strive to move back toward the “T” in between shots. ‘Dominating the T’ is key strategy later on in the game. The main reason is that from this position the player can quickly move to any part of the court. Fast access to any part means retrieving the opponent’s next shot with the minimum effort, movement and energy.
